For over a year now, our small team (6-8 members) has been working on a game code-named Baryon. We've been very secretive, not posting screenshots or information about the game. I think it's time to reveal a few details.
First of all, "Baryon" is a very expansive RPG. That's why it's taking (and will take) a long time to develop. Baryon deviates from our last RPG, Monster RPG 2, in that it is an action RPG. Battles take place in a 2D "side scroller" environment with platforms. There will be a world map similar to Monster RPG 2's. Walking around towns and dungeons is quite interesting because there are three types of levels: normal 2D top-down (Monster RPG 2 style) levels, "painted" levels and isometric levels. Our engine is written to support all 3.
"Painted" levels as we call them, are levels that are not built from tiles. These are large and hand painted digitally. These are so far the most rare type of level but perhaps the most beautiful.
Some things that will be in the game, but are not added yet are: skill trees, massive attack combos, cool special effects in battle, weapon upgrades, boss battles, mini-games (some are done already) and a story we've spent a long time discussing and refining (I'm sure much to the delight of Monster RPG 2 fans, who know THAT story is rather spartan.)
The game tells a story through 2 protagonists: Ryori and Kanon. And you'll get to choose whom you wish to play as at various points in the game, adding replay value. During battle you'll be able to switch between the two, who will each have different skills.
Why am I mentioning this now? Because we're trying to begin opening up early alpha testing of the game. On our Monster RPG 2 Indiegogo campaign, we're offering alpha versions (and eventually the full version) of the game for $5 and up contributions. I'm really hoping we meet our rather modest $1,500 goal so we can get some fresh eyes on Baryon. If you're a Monster RPG 2 fan or like the sound of this new game, check out the campaign and make a pledge! Every dollar is highly appreciated!
